Eldorado Canyon reservations and entry

If you're driving into Eldorado Canyon on a Saturday, Sunday, or summer holiday between May 1 and October 1, you need a free timed entry reservation from CPWshop.com, plus a state parks pass on top of it. Every other day you can just drive up, and arriving by shuttle, bike, or on foot never needs a reservation at all.

Proof of reservation

When the park fills
From May 1 to October 1, a timed reservation guarantees you a parking spot inside the park, though not necessarily near your trailhead. From October 1 to May 1 there are no reservations, and the park often hits capacity on weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when entry may be denied.

Eldorado Canyon is a Colorado state park, not a City of Boulder open space, so none of the OSMP parking rules apply here. Colorado Parks and Wildlife runs it, and getting in takes two separate things on a busy day: a timed vehicle entry reservation, and a park pass or entrance fee. People mix those up constantly, show up with one and not the other, and get turned around at the gate. Here's how each piece actually works, and the three ways to skip the reservation entirely.

When you need a reservation, and when you don't

CPW requires a timed vehicle entry reservation on Saturdays, Sundays, and summer holidays from May 1 through October 1. CPW names those holidays specifically: Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Outside those days, on any weekday in season and on every day from October through April, you can drive up without booking anything.

The requirement is narrower than most people assume. CPW states that timed entry reservations are only required for the inner canyon, and that they're not required for anyone using the shuttle, walking, biking, or riding a horse. It's a system for managing cars on a narrow canyon road, not a cap on people.

The single easiest way to avoid the whole thing is to visit on a weekday. The canyon is quieter, parking is easier, and you'll spend nothing extra beyond the entrance fee.

How the timed entry reservation works

The reservation itself is free. It reserves a two-hour window during which you may drive through the entrance station, and CPW offers windows from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Here's the rest of the fine print, all of it from CPW:

  • Booked only at CPWshop.com. You can't buy one at the park, the entrance station, or the visitor center. If you drive out without one on a reservation day, there's no fixing it at the gate.
  • 30 days ahead, plus a 24-hour release. Windows open a month in advance, and CPW holds back a small number of same-day spots that open 24 hours before the date. Same-day booking stays available until 4:30 p.m., as long as anything's left.
  • One per day, per vehicle, four per 30 days. Each customer gets one reservation per day per vehicle, capped at four reservations in any 30-day period. Regulars, plan accordingly.
  • Bring proof, on paper. Print or screenshot the confirmation before you leave. CPW is blunt about this: cell connectivity in the canyon is very poor, and you'll be turned away if you can't show it. If your window is the first one of the day, between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m., CPW requires the printed confirmation displayed on your dashboard.
  • You're not locked in once you're inside. There's no length-of-stay requirement, so you can leave whenever you like. What has to happen inside your two-hour window is the entering, including re-entering if you duck out and come back.
  • No refunds, no resale. Reservations are non-transferable, refunds aren't offered, and CPW prohibits reselling or auctioning them.

What entry costs, and which passes count

A reservation is not a pass. CPW verifies daily entry fees and annual passes separately, at the entrance station. Here's every pass that gets you in, and whether it also excuses you from booking a window.

A note on the daily vehicle pass: CPW's statewide passes page doesn't publish a single per-park figure, and instead sells separate daily vehicle passes for Colorado license plates and for out-of-state plates. Eldorado's own park page posts a daily vehicle pass of $10 to $15, and its reservation section states a $10 daily entrance fee at the entrance station for visitors without an annual pass. If the exact figure matters to your budget, confirm it on CPW's Eldorado page before you drive out. Daily entrance fees aren't refundable once the transaction goes through.

Three ways in that skip the reservation

Because the reservation only governs vehicles entering the inner canyon, there are legitimate ways around it.

Ride the free Eldo Shuttle

Boulder County, CPW, and the City of Boulder run a free weekend shuttle from Boulder and from US 36 and McCaslin into Eldorado Canyon State Park, also serving the Marshall Mesa, Doudy Draw, and South Mesa trailheads and the Eldorado Springs Pool. No timed entry reservation is required to ride it or to park at a shuttle stop. In 2026 Boulder County lists service on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from May 23 through Sept. 13, running every 20 minutes from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sept. 7 and every 30 minutes on the final September weekend. It runs on Memorial Day, the observed Independence Day holiday, and Labor Day, but not on Juneteenth. The first bus leaves Boulder at Baseline and Broadway at 8 a.m., and the last one leaves the Eldorado Canyon visitor center at 6 p.m.

You still need a parks pass to ride into the state park: bring an annual pass, buy a day pass online first, or bring $4 in exact cash per adult. A Keep Colorado Wild Pass covers the holder plus up to three other adults on the shuttle, so bring the vehicle registration or a photo of it. Riding only as far as Marshall Mesa, Doudy Draw, or South Mesa needs no pass or fee at all. Crash pads and climbing gear are welcome, leashed dogs are welcome, and the shuttles and stops are ADA accessible, including access to the wheelchair accessible Fowler Trail. CPW's own page lists slightly different shuttle hours than Boulder County does, so check Boulder County's Eldo Shuttle page for the current season before you plan around it.

Walk or bike in

Arriving on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback needs no reservation at any time of year. You'll pay the $4 individual daily pass, or use an annual pass. One real constraint, though: CPW states plainly that there's no public parking in the town of Eldorado Springs, so parking outside the gate and strolling in isn't an option. Bike the whole way from Boulder, or take the shuttle.

Come on a weekday

The simplest answer. Monday through Friday, in any season, there's no reservation at all. You pay the entrance fee or show your pass and drive in. For a canyon this popular, a Tuesday morning is a completely different experience.

Parking, capacity, and getting turned away

This part runs opposite to what people expect. During the reservation season, from May 1 to October 1, CPW says a timed vehicle reservation guarantees you a parking spot inside the park. That's the whole point of the system. The caveat CPW attaches is that your spot may not be near the trailhead or the wall you were aiming for, so build in a walk.

From October 1 to May 1, when there's no reservation system, the park runs first-come. CPW says it often reaches vehicle parking capacity on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and that entry may be denied when it's full. So the trip most likely to end with you turned around at the gate isn't a July Saturday with a booking, it's a bluebird Saturday in March at 11 a.m. In the off-season, come early.

Worth checking either way: CPW posts current conditions and closures on the park page, and fire restrictions have been in effect (propane only, no wood or charcoal, no open fires). Conditions change, so read that page the morning you go.

Practical tips before you drive out

  • Book the window, then buy the pass. Two separate transactions, two separate things to show. The reservation is free, the pass isn't, and having one without the other doesn't get you in.
  • Print it. Actually print it. Cell service in the canyon is genuinely bad, and a screenshot buried in a phone that won't load is how people get turned around. For a 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. window, CPW requires the printed copy on your dashboard.
  • Climbers, count your days. Four reservations per 30-day period is a real limit if Eldo is your regular crag. Weekdays don't count against it, since they don't need a reservation.
  • Colorado residents, do the math on the pass. At $29, the Keep Colorado Wild Pass beats three daily entries, and it works at every state park for the year. You still book the reservation.
  • Don't plan on parking in Eldorado Springs. There isn't any public parking in town. The shuttle exists because of this.
  • Check CPW before you go. Seasons, holiday lists, and fees get adjusted year to year. The park page is the source of truth, and it's linked at the bottom of this page.
